Darwin Núñez has been grossly mismanaged by Arne Slot, and it’s genuinely frustrating to witness.

The idea that the No. 9 role “belongs” to Diogo Jota, after one goal in yet     See More diocre performance, is baffling. Núñez scored a game-winning brace off the bench vs Brentford, played solidly against Lille, and was then benched for an out-of-position Luis Díaz in the next two league games.

He started vs Spurs in the cup, won a penalty, and created three key passes in what was arguably our most emphatic performance of the season. His reward? Seven games on the bench.

During that stretch:

Jota: 5 starts (363 minutes) – 1 assist, 2 shots on target, 2 big chances missed.


Núñez: 0 starts (137 minutes) – 1 assist, 2 shots on target, 2 big chances missed.


Núñez wasn’t great in those cameos, but his previous solid performances were never rewarded with trust. His confidence was crushed, then he was expected to change games in 20-minute bursts.

Then comes March 9, after a brilliant assist in a late cameo vs PSG, he finally started vs Southampton in the league — his first since December 27 (a dominant 3-1-win vs Leicester – in fact Liverpool haven't lost a game Nunez has started since Everton away last season, only drawing against Arsenal and Newcastle away). He had a frustrating first half, made a rash challenge, and suddenly everyone wants him sold. But 10 minutes later, he scored a brilliant striker’s finish, won a penalty, and turned the match on its head.

Given that Díaz had 1 goal in 17 games, Jota 1 in 11, and Gakpo wasn’t fit, you'd think Núñez earned a run in the team. He had momentum, confidence, and the perfect profile to exploit PSG’s high line and small, technical midfield.

Instead? Slot gives Jota 73 minutes in which he contributes:

Now we all know the headlines, but how would your confidence be after having seen that performance get a start over you. Watching that performance drag the team into disrepute. Confident enough to take a penalty? I wouldn’t think so. Confident enough to step forward knowing even if you take a good penalty only for it to be saved by the world’s best shootout keeper, that you will receive death threats and every ounce of the blame? Not in a million years.

Fast forward 5 days to the cup final. Núñez had:

5 games vs Newcastle, including an all-time performance at St James's Park.

Meanwhile, Jota:


10 games vs Newcastle


2 goals, 2 assists


618 minutes (G/A every 155 mins)


Jota's last truly impactful game? Maybe his 2 goals in the EFL Cup vs West Ham in September. Núñez, on the other hand, was excellent vs Southampton, Tottenham, Lille and magical off the bench vs Brentford. But in 11 of the 15 games since he supposedly “won us the league” at the Brentford Community stadium, one of the many late winners he's supplied to send us into mad rapture, he was benched.

The fact is this: When Núñez starts and is shown a shred of belief, he performs.

So maybe, just maybe, it would have been a good idea to start him in a fixture he is prolific in, against an ageing Newcastle backline and instead of a player in the worst form of his career.

No, of course not.

Just leave the trophy to the mercy of Jota. Who had:

And say what you want about his finishing — the Uruguayan scored 18 goals and made 13 assists in 3026 minutes in 2023/24. That’s a goal contribution every 97 minutes.

If he’d been trusted when he deserved a run in the team, Darwin's season might have looked very different — for him, and for us. Now I have had to use Diogo Jota as a negative comparison to illustrate my point, but I don’t for a second think he’s an awful footballer. I just know that he has had an awful season. Slot’s blind faith in him and the simply irritating Diaz experiment, has robbed fans of a deserved dance with the devil that is Darwin Núñez.    See Less
