The one counter to the Mainoo comments I can think of is where does he fit in the current United system? There's absolutely no doubting that he is a quality young player, and will almost     See More be a phenomenal player in the future, but he's slightly Bellingham-esque in that the team needs to be built around him to allow him to perform. The difference is he doesn't appear to have the same potential level of offensive output to justify doing that.

He struggles in a midfield two (leaves too much grunt work for his partner), and United don't look to be returning to a midfield three any time soon. He's okay as a 10, but it's not his most natural position. As bad as Hojlund and Zirkzee have been, he offers even less as a 9. So in the end you've got a talented young player with some deficiencies, who doesn't fit the system, and wants 180k a week. Sure, you could take the punt on being able to mould him to fit the system, but I can understand the motivation of exploring options when he represents a quick $70-80m profit in a world where you don't get time to develop anything.    See Less
